Information About Kovalam :

             Kovalam is an idyllic coastal town located around 13 km from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. Famous for its three adjacent crescent-shaped shallow water and low tidal beaches, Kovalam is dotted with resorts and ayurvedic massage centers.

             Earlier a fishing village, Kovalam started attracting tourists in the 1930s and shot to fame in the hippie epoch of the 1970s. It still sees an influx of tourists from Israel and Europe. Ayurvedic treatments and massages are one of its most popular indulgences along with yoga, meditation as well as other cultural activities. Kovalam perhaps comes full circle as it is also a shopping destination given the rich spices, wooden statues, and handicrafts that can make popular takeaways. 

Best Time To Visit Kovalam :

           September to March is the best time to visit Kovalam in terms of weather for traveling. Monsoons experience heavy rainfall, but this is a good time if you want to just rejuvenate yourself in great weather within your resort or to take Ayurvedic treatments. Kovalam experiences heavy rainfall during monsoons. It is not advisable to go here during these months as mobility is highly affected during the monsoon months.

How To Reach Kovalam :

              Kovalam doesn't have its own airport or railway station, the nearest ones are in Trivandrum. Regular buses connect Kovalam to various cities. The drive across the Trivandrum bypass is also another delightful experience.

1 . How To Reach Kovalam By Flight :

                The nearest airport is the Trivandrum International Airport that is 15 km away from Kovalam. From there you can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw or travel by the KSRTC bus to Kovalam.

2 . How To Reach Kovalam By Road :
                  Kovalam is well connected to Thiruvananthapuram city center by road. You can travel by bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw from there. Thiruvananthapuram can be reached easily from any city by road.
3 . How To Reach Kovalam By Train :
                The nearest railway station is Thiruvananthapuram Central that is about 16 km away from Kovalam.

Places To Visit In Kovalam :

1. Vellayani Lake :

                   One of the most popular freshwater lakes, Velliyani Lake is located 7km away south of Kovalam in Trivandrum, Kerala. Velliyani lake is also known as 'Velliyani Kayal' in the regional language Malayalam. Spread over 7.5 acres, the lake is a significant water source for irrigation and drinking purposes.

                  Vellayani Lake is on the premises of Vellayani Agricultural University which is also a must-see place. It is ideal for an evening walk with the cool breeze and lotus blooming on the lake that rejuvenates any passerby. Vellayani Kayal gives a nostalgic feeling to anyone who wishes to experience the goodness of a village away from city life.

2 . Water Sports In Kovalam :

                    Kovalam has a beautiful beach surrounded by rows of green palm groves. It is one of the most picturesque beaches of India with a wide variety of water sports activities. The beach can be divided into three parts. Lighthouse beach, which lies to the South, the northernmost part is known as Samudra and Hawah which is located in the center.

              All three parts are frequented by travelers and have a wide offering of restaurants and beach resorts. The water activities which are offered by the sports clubs include parasailing, snorkeling, windsurfing, and backwater cruise.

3 . Lighthouse Beach :

            Located in Kovalam (Southern Kerala), the Lighthouse Beach is known for the 35 meters tall Vizhinjam Lighthouse, located on the top of the Kurumkal hillock. The lighthouse is entirely made of stones and colored in red and white bands. Visitors love to reach the top of this tall structure by using a spiral staircase to click some memorable photographs.

             Lighthouse beach is a perfect spot to enjoy water activities and sports, such as surfing, parasailing, and paragliding. Travelers also like to play volleyball on the beach. The beach is also well known for its lush palm plantations and trees that dot the entire area. Easy accessibility, lip-smacking food, and affordable lodging add to the charm of this place.

4 . Hawah Beach :

                    Hawah is a stretch of isolated beach famous for its enchanting sunset views. Renowned as the second largest beach, it is also known as Eve's Beach for it being the first topless beach in India. However, topless bathing is banned now.

5 . Halcyon Castle :

                 Halcyon Castle was a family retreat built for the royal family of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bai. The castle is located in Travancore in God's Own Country, Kerala. The splendid castle is an example of the traditional architecture of Travancore. The beautiful expansive lawn all around the magnificent castle is a treat to the eyes.

                The castle was sold to the Government of Kerala after which a hotelier bought it and opened it to the public as a 5-Star Hotel in Kovalam. There have been several owners of the hotel to date. However, the majestic Halcyon Castle never fails to attract tourists from all over the world.

6 . Samudra Beach :

                 Samudra beach is a clean and isolated beach in Kovalam. A large promontory separates this northern beach from the southern side. This beach is also an excellent place to visit during one's honeymoon. November to February would be a great time to visit Samudra beach.

               Samudra beach is where you can enjoy the sight of shoreline fishing and watch local fishermen ply their trade. There is also a mosque on this beach. There are a couple of food stalls on the beach as well. Although the beach has its own high season, it is still quite untouched by large scale tourism, thus preserving its serenity.
